早上和晚上的散步，把在室內的一天切開。很多人說，養狗以後才真正認識自己那條街和附近的公園。Morning and evening walks cut an indoor day into pieces. Many people say they only met their own street and the nearest park after the dog arrived.

02回家有人在門口Someone at the door

工時長、一人單位多。狗不會回訊息，可是鎖匙一響，尾巴就開始搖。這個『有誰在等』很具體。Long hours, many one-person flats. A dog will not text back, but the keys turn and the tail starts. Being waited for is concrete.

03街坊開始跟你打招呼Neighbours start saying hello

牽著狗，陌生人會問名字、問幾歲。公園的狗主會變成一個小圈子。在高樓城市裡，這是難得的鄰里感。With a dog on a lead, strangers ask the name and the age. Park regulars turn into a small circle. In a tower city, that is rare neighbourliness.

04在家工作以後After work moved home

枱底有一雙眼睛在等。狗逼你起身、下樓、看一眼天空。這種打斷又煩又有用。A pair of eyes waits under the desk. The dog makes you stand, go downstairs, and look at the sky. The interruption is annoying and useful.

05小型犬讓單位也可能Small dogs made flats possible

貴婦、博美、吉娃娃、西施——小型伴侶犬讓很多人覺得單位也住得下。體型細不代表需求少；運動、訓練和陪伴仍然一樣不少。Poodles, Poms, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus — small companion dogs made many people feel a flat could work. Small size does not mean small needs. Exercise, training, and company still count.

很多人把這種感覺叫治癒。它很實在：散步、節奏、每天被需要。選一種日子，看這份陪伴長什麼樣。People call the feeling healing. The real parts are walks, rhythm, and being needed today. Pick a kind of day.

有些人在摸自己的狗、或者被牠靠著坐之後，肩膀會鬆下來。這是安慰。情緒若已經蓋過生活，人也需要人：朋友、輔導、醫生。狗可以陪你走到那些幫助的門口。 Some people feel their shoulders drop after stroking their own dog, or when the dog leans against them. That is comfort. When a low mood runs the whole day, people also need people: a friend, a counsellor, a doctor. The dog can walk with you to that door.

『最受歡迎』有兩份名單。一份是救援和街坊裡常見的臉，一份是寵物店和相冊裡的人氣。以下是大概的觀察，不是統計排名。“Most popular” is two lists. One is the faces common in rescues and on the street. The other is the shop window and the photo album. These are broad observations, not a statistical ranking.

唐狗與混種狗Tong gau and mixed dogs

村狗的後代、救援回來的狗、親友送養的混種。顏色和性格都不統一，在領養名單上卻很常見。香港愛護動物協會、香港拯救狗協會（HKDR）和其他救援團體，是一個好的起點。Descendants of village dogs, rescues, mixed dogs from friends. Colours and temperaments do not match, but they are common on adoption lists. The SPCA, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR), and other rescue groups are a good place to start.

細小的伴侶犬：貴婦、博美、西施、瑪爾濟斯Small companions: Poodle, Pom, Shih Tzu, Maltese

在屋苑電梯和公園裡很常見。體型適合單位，但美容、牙齒和叫聲都要放進預算和時間表。Common in estate lifts and parks. The size suits a flat, but grooming, teeth, and barking all belong in the budget and the calendar.

年紀大的狗Older dogs

救援團體裡常有成年和老年狗。性格已經定型，你見到的就是牠。對時間不多、但想要穩定陪伴的人，常常是很好的配對。Rescues often have adult and senior dogs. The temperament is settled — what you meet is who they are. For people with less time who want steady company, it is often a good match.

在香港養狗，先看規則和天氣In Hong Kong, rules and weather come first

根據漁農自然護理署（漁護署）的資料，年滿五個月的狗須領有牌照、植入晶片和接種狂犬病疫苗，牌照要按時續期。公眾地方一般要用狗帶牽著狗；郊野公園和個別公園對狗隻有不同安排，部分範圍不准帶狗進入。政策會更新，重要決定請以漁護署和相關場地的最新公告為準。According to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), dogs over five months old must be licensed, microchipped, and vaccinated against rabies, and the licence must be renewed on time. In public places dogs generally need to be on a lead. Country parks and individual parks have their own arrangements, and some areas do not allow dogs. Rules change: check AFCD and the venue’s latest notices before an important decision.

很多屋苑的公契或租約對養狗有規定，有的限制大小或數目，有的要求用指定電梯或抱起。簽約前先問清楚。夏天避開正午和熱路面，帶水出門；扁面犬和厚毛犬尤其要小心中暑。Many estates’ deeds of mutual covenant or tenancy agreements set rules on dogs — size, number, a designated lift, or carrying them. Ask before you sign. In summer, avoid midday and hot pavement and carry water. Flat-faced and heavy-coated dogs are especially at risk of heatstroke.

點一張臉。碗和玩具會換成這隻狗常見的喜好。朱古力、提子、洋蔥、蒜、木糖醇、夏威夷果仁、熟骨頭、酒和咖啡因不屬於任何一隻狗。Tap a face. The bowl and the toys change to that dog’s usual favourites. Chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, macadamias, cooked bones, alcohol, and caffeine belong to none of them.

這是配對，不是命運。帶牠回家之前，仍然要見面、問健康、看牠喜不喜歡你。A match, not a fate. Before anyone comes home, meet them, ask about health, and see whether they like you.

帶狗回家之前Before a dog comes home

一隻狗常常會陪十多年。下面三張清單比任何品種介紹都優先。A dog often stays for more than a decade. These three lists come before any breed description.

領養Adopting
  • 到 SPCA、香港拯救狗協會（HKDR）或其他可靠救援團體，見過真實的狗Meet real dogs at the SPCA, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR), or another careful rescue
  • 問年齡、性格、是否已絕育、打疫苗和植晶片Ask age, temperament, neuter status, vaccines, and microchip
  • 多見幾次，一起散一段步，看牠怎樣面對街道和陌生人Meet more than once. Walk together and see how they handle the street and strangers
  • 先問清楚大廈和業主，準備牽繩、胸背帶、睡墊和安靜的第一週Check with the building and landlord. Prepare a lead, a harness, a bed, and a quiet first week
如果是買If you buy
  • 請對方出示動物售賣商牌照或相關許可，可向漁護署核對Ask to see the animal trader licence or relevant permit, and check it with AFCD
  • 現場掃描晶片，紀錄要和狗對得上Scan the microchip on the spot. The papers should match the dog
  • 要求看母犬和生活環境；扁面犬要特別看呼吸Ask to see the mother and the living place. With flat-faced breeds, watch the breathing
  • 滿五個月後記得領牌和打狂犬病疫苗；健康和性格比毛色價錢重要Licence and rabies vaccine after five months. Health and temperament come before colour and price
不能給狗吃的東西Keep these away from dogs
  • 朱古力、咖啡、茶和其他含咖啡因的東西Chocolate, coffee, tea, and anything with caffeine
  • 提子、提子乾、洋蔥、蒜、韭菜Grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chives
  • 木糖醇（無糖香口膠、部分花生醬）、夏威夷果仁、酒Xylitol (sugar-free gum, some peanut butters), macadamia nuts, alcohol
  • 煮熟的骨頭會碎裂；誤食了請立即聯絡獸醫Cooked bones splinter. If anything is swallowed, call a vet straight away
